About Yuma

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • Housetrained: Yes
Hello! I'm Yuma! I'm a unique breed of dog known as Shar-pei. If you go Googling the temperaments and personalities of my breed, you'll only learn half the story about me. So, sit back, grab a cup of your favorite beverage, and settle in for The Story of Yuma. Yes, I'm very intelligent, true to breed. This means I'm quite trainable and I learn quickly -- you will love that about me. However, I did have some not-so-great experiences with some not-so-great people before I found my way here to Desert Haven, where thankfully, the people are taking really good care of me. Because I lacked quality socialization experiences, at the moment, I tend to be a little hesitant to come right to new people for affection and loves, but I'm beginning to be more confident. I am the most gentle dog you can imagine, so sweet and sensitive. I wouldn't hurt a fly, I'd probably make friends with it! My foster home has cats and I've done well around them. The volunteers here have found that I quickly attach and trust patient and tender-hearted people. For this reason, they think that I would do well in a calmer home, without the chaos of small children. I am likely very sweet and gentle with older, respectful children however. Because, as I mentioned, I'm very gentle. Once I trust my people, I am all-in. I am a loyal dog. I love going for walks and short runs. I am great on a leash. I will happily let you touch me all over, trim my nails, and you can pet me and wash me and give me massages with coconut oil. What's that you say? Yes, also true to breed, I do have some skin and eye issues that need tending. I am going to have a visit at the veterinarian to learn the best course of action to make sure my skin and eye needs are taken care of. If you have a dog, this is great news! I love being around other dogs. I learn from them and I enjoy being part of the doggie action. The people here think that I would thrive in a family with another dog to help build my confidence. Well, that's my story! If you think that we'd be a great match, send an inquiry about me. I can't wait to hear your story too! Love, Yuma
